Origin: Originate from the mesodermal leaflet (hypaxial myotome)

Insertion: Attaches to the pisiform bone and hook of the hamate on the ulnar side, and the tubercle of the scaphoid and ridge of the trapezium on the radial side

Innervation: It does not have specific sensory or motor innervation, sheltering the median nerve in the carpal tunnel

Action: Protect the median nerve and the flexor tendons as they pass through this tunnel, serve as a pulley for the carpal flexor muscles and to stabilize the carpal system

Origin: Middle half of the posterior surface of the tibia

Insertion: Bases of the distal phalanges of digits 2-5

Innervation: Tibial nerve (L5, S1, S2)

Action: Flexes the metatarsophalangeal, proximal interphalangeal and distal interphalangeal joints of digits 2-5; plantar flexes the foot

Origin: Lateral condyle of the femur

Insertion: Posterior surface of the tibia above soleal line

Action: Flexes and rotates the leg medially (with the foot planted, it rotates the thigh laterally)

Action: Extends (plantar flexes) and everts the foot

Origin: Upper two/thirds of the lateral surface of the fibula

Insertion: After crossing the plantar surface of the foot deep to the intrinsic muscles, it inserts on the medial cuneiform and the base of the 1st metatarsal bone

Innervation: Superficial fibular (peroneal) nerve

Action: Extends (plantar flexes) and everts the foot

Origin: Lateral tibial condyle and the upper lateral surface of the tibia

Insertion: Lateral tibial condyle and the upper lateral surface of the tibia

Innervation: Deep fibular (peroneal) nerve

Action: Dorsiflexes and inverts the foot

Origin: Lower one third of the lateral surface of the fibula

Insertion: Tuberosity of the base of the 5th metatarsal

Innervation: Ssuperficial fibular (peroneal) nerve

Action: Extends (plantar flexes) and everts the foot

Sensory: Skin of the plantar surface of the foot and toes; skin of the dorsal surface of the distal toes (nail bed region)

Motor: Muscles of the anterior compartment of the leg (tibialis anterior muscles, extensor hallucis longus muscles, extensor digitorum longus muscles, fibularis tertius muscles) and muscles of the dorsum of the foot (extensor digitorum brevis muscles and extensor hallucis brevis muscles)

Sensory: Skin of the web between the great toe and the 2nd toe
